Writing an Alternate Reality Workshop. Portland March 7, 2026

What do you wish was different?

That was a question at the outset of writing writing Clear and Sane. The thought exercise helped create the world that the characters Cardio, Cherry, Reginald, and Mary tromp through.

To celebrate the book and to lift up spirits, we are putting on a workshop in Portland, Writing an Alternate Reality.

  • Saturday March 7

  • 4pm

  • Rose City Book Pub 1329 NE Fremont St.

Eventbrite link (its helpful to us, but RSVP is not necessary. Show up!)

The workshop is not just for writers. We hope it is an opportunity to work together to contribute to how we make our world together. In about an hour, we will go through a shared three-step process to co-create an alternate version of our world.

The event is open to anyone (though be aware I have trouble not cursing in public. Little ears!). The event is free. Books will be for sale, that’s my motivation here.

Gather with us at the dreamy Rose City Book Pub. Order a pint, make a world, and stay for dinner with us all.

Registration in advance is useful for our planning.

Join us the night before for H.O.C.U.S.

When I lived in Portland, I was an enthusiastic member of H.O.C.U.S. — The Hermetic Order of Clandestine Urban Scribes. It is a delightful evening of reading, community, and serious silliness. Join us the previous night, Friday March 6 at the same lovely place the Rose City Book Pub, 7:30, for the quarterly convening of HOCUS, this time we will be exploring forgotten places together.

Thank you. Please feel free to reach out with any ideas, questions, or encouragement. And if you have not yet read Clear and Sane, order it on my website, at your favorite book store, or pick it up at
